how to make hills more visible?
« on: 6 March 2012, 20:21:53 »
You maybe all noticed that you cannot see the ups and downs very good in megaglest. I am asking myself why this is so hard to see ?
Anyone has an idea how to make them more visible and myabe has some hints for openGL how to do it?

I can't venture into the technical aspects of it, but the lighting and camera angle likely play a sizeable role. Our lighting sucks, to be frank. An improved dynamic lighting system that casts shadows from anything, the ground included, would improve 3D depth. Also, bump maps on tileset surfaces could make the ground in general appear to be more realistic.

GAE already is venturing in the right direction.
Bump mapping, dynamic lighting, are crucial to getting depth. Also some cheap form of ambient occlusion would do good on the hills aspect.
