[not a bug] Lagging when using box select
« on: 5 May 2012, 19:50:39 »
Would it be possible to select units only when mouse button ist released?
This could be implemented as an optional setting.

When I play Annex and I have more than 10 units on my screen and I start to select them with a selectionbox, my laptop lags.
It will take at least 10 seconds to select them.

10 seconds? Hmm, maybe your hardware is the problem then...

Yes, that's why I play MegaGlest and not SpringRTS or 0ad.

But this selectionbox is really the only problem…
I can command a group of 30 units - no problem - no lag
But selecting 10 Units with that box causes lagging.
Actually I select units with shift+click and double clicks and never had a lag there.

I moved this to bug reports, as this isn't a feature request; the box select works fine for other players. Please read the sticked READ THIS FIRST: How to report bugs thread in this category and follow its instructions on reporting such bugs. You have not even mentioned your hardware, operating system, or even the version of MegaGlest you are using!

Well, Basto is asking for a change / new feature, and this is clearly not a bug in MegaGlest, which he seems to be aware of. SoI'd say the feature requests forum wasn't so wrong. It's also what I suggested he could post to.

I'm not so sure. It doesn't sound like any specific bug, as we don't seem to be able to reproduce it, and it sounds like the user has a low-end computer. However, if there's something that causes the box select to be laggy under certain hardware circumstances, it sounds more like we'd need a bug fix rather than a new feature. As well, no feature was actually proposed, the poster merely stated they are having problems with an existing feature. I suppose feature requests isn't entirely wrong (isn't a bug fix just a feature to solve an issue?), but bug reports would be more accurate.

You can try another way of selecting to see if it works better on your hardware. Edit glestuser.ini and add this:

EnableColorPicking=true

And let me know if that works better for you?

Thanks

*mhm* I agree with Omega, this feature would not be much of use for users, who don't have that bug.
It's more a request for a fix than for a feature.

@softcoder:
With that option it's playable, thanks.

Marked as 'not a bug' since this is not an issue on systems which match the minimum system requirements. I'm glad you were able to get better performance thanks to Softcoders' hint, though. Please also check the FAQ on how to improve your performance if you haven't done this, yet.
