« on: 13 May 2012, 12:06:40 »
I have made a translation of MegaGlest version 3.6.0.3 into Scots Gaelic. Here it is: http://www.foramnagaidhlig.net/temp/MegaGlest_gd_3.6.0.3.zip

Thank you, GunChleoc, that's great!

I've just added your translations to the subversion repository.

There are a few (minor) issues, though:

(1) Missing translations keys
Here are some examples:
  • ShadowTextureSize
  • RainEffectMenuGame
  • GettingModlistFromMasterserver
  • PleaseWaitCalculatingCRC
All of these (and more) were added after the 3.6.0 release, so I assume you did not use the in-develpopment english language file as a basis for your translations, as recommended in the translation guide. You could add those which are missing now, or you can subscribe to the megaglest-translators mailing list and wait until we call for translations for the release (we normally do this when we are approaching a release and do not plan to add new translation keys).

(2) Some translations do not fit
Some of the translations you use are too long and overwrite buttons or other GUI element margins. One of those is on the main menu, others in the custom game menu, yet others elsewhere. Please retest (also in-game for the tutorials/scenarios) and improve these where possible.

Thank you.

Thanks for adding and checking!

I was working on the last release, but I've now got the current source and will start working on that ASAP. I haven't compiled it yet, I hope I'll be able to do that without snags. I've found the guide, so fingers crossed.

The problem with Gaelic is that it needs more space than English. Just the same way you couldn't fit English into buttons designed for Chinese, it is simply longer. I have tweaked it to death as far as I can go, working on Glestae and Megaglest in parallel. Unless you programming wizzes can come up with tricks like line breaks, scroll bars or more width, we will have to live with it.

I also have some serious problems with yes/no. Gaelic has no direct words for it, you repeat the verb used in the questions in positive/negative form. So, if all the yes/no strings where there isn't a question could be replaced by on/off, for example, then this would help with string length. E.g. in the custom games menu, I can turn the Advanced Options "yes/no", I can't turn them "on/off" (= "air/dheth" which is nicely short). And since I can't translate each yes/no individually, I have to start every question with a generic verb, e.g. "Would you like to X?" or "Do you want to X?". So, in the game menu, we have an entry "Exit game?", which I had to translate with "Would you like to exit the game?", because I need to be able to say "would like to/would not like to" in the following dialog box, which uses the same string. I think the question mark looks weird in English in the game menu anyway, so how about replacing it with an extra string that says "Exit Game"?

I hope I have explained this in a way that makes sense  If not, please ask and I will try to explain better.

I have already posted a feature request for the tutorials, because I can't make the instructions fit https://forum.megaglest.org/index.php?topic=8331.0
