Hi,

I installed the latest version of the game on my sons pc.
This pc runs on Windows 7 32 bit and contains a Geforce 8400 GS video card.
I installed the latest drivers and this card support opengl 2.1.

When I start the game, I get the box where the game runs in. The game "seems" to run as it plays the music of the game.
But there is NO video output to the screen. Only a black screen.

Any suggestions?

Thank you.

It should work out of the box, but now that it dosn't i would try changing video settings in the glestuser.ini file.(It's worth considereing if the video card has up to date drivers before starting on changing the glestuser.ini file).

This is done as this

Press start and type in %appdata%

This should make you end up in a folder named

C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Roaming\

where "yourusername" is the name of the windows7 account you are logged in with.

then you need to open the folder "megaglest"

In here you should fine a file called glestuser.ini

inhere you can try change the video settings.

The settings you could try change are the following.(i would try windowed first. set to 1, if that works you should report back here.

ScreenHeight=1050
ScreenWidth=1680

Windowed=0

ShadowTextureSize=1024 (Values acceptable is 256 - 512 -1024).

EnableTextureCompression=1 (Acceptable values are "1" for on and "0" for off.)

Textures3D=1 (Acceptable values are "1" for on and "0" for off.)

MaxLights=8 (1-8)

Filter=Trilinear (Values are Bilinear and Trilinear not sure if its supposed to be with big or small B).

Please also do not use the "(Mega)Glest Configurator" application. If you used it before you made the experience you are reporting on then please uninstall the game, verify it has been entirely removed off %ProgramFiles% (you can enter this variable in the Windows Explorer location bar or on the Windows 7 'Start' menu in the 'Search' box), reinstall it, and try again.

Please also read the FAQ which discusses settings to use with low performance video cards.

We should really get rid of those programs anyways, why do we even still have them?

configurator is already gone from svn and will not ship with the next release

exserco: can you confirm if any of the above advice has helped or if you still need additional help?

Hi,

I'm not at home for the moment, so I'll try these things in the coming weekend.
I'll keep you posted.

The problem starts already here: C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Roaming\
I find the map, but the map megaglest isn't there.
A search on the hd for glestuser.ini gives me no hits also.
So I think something went seriously wrong.

How to make sure that the game is completely gone from the system, so I can make a new, fresh, installation?

Hi there,

The topic can be closed.
I did an uninstall, checked for remainings that I could delete, and then a new install.

Problem solved!

Thanks to everyone that tried to help me.

To completely remove MegaGlest files off Windows, assuming you used the default install location, delete these directories and the files and subdirectories they contain:
  • %ProgramFiles%\MegaGlest\
  • %ApplicationData%\MegaGlest\

%ProgramFiles% is an environment variable which usually points to C:\Program Files.
%ApplicationData% is an environment variable which, on points to different locations depending on your Windows version, as discussed on the INI page on the wiki.
