Camera follows unit feature
« on: 24 September 2012, 18:10:18 »
I have added an expimental feature where you can have the camera follow a specific unit (as if you were the unit looking into the world). Select the unit and press f4 and move the unit. To turn it off unselect all units and press f4 again.

I improved this feature a bit and the camera moves are much more smooth now.
A question I still have is how do we want this feature to work ?
Should one be able to look around in a 180 degree range ( up down left right ), or should the Camera be bound to the units movement/direction only ( like it is now ).
Where should the camera been positioned? ( currently a bit above the units given height ) .

This is very nice now with smooth movements. I do indeed miss the feature to be able to at least look left and right - top and bottom would be nice, too, so you can better point at what to attack or actually see whom you're fighting. That's also why I'd move the camera a bit below the units height, after all that's where most units have their eyes currently.
Speaking of which, has anyone tried this with airborne units, yet?

it's actually a quite cool feature for rpg scenarios. would be cool if you could force it via lua. i remember some nice wc3 maps that where made that way

Is there a patch for this? It doesn't seem like it would be unable to work on a GAE based source since it isn't related to the primary differences between engines.

kk thanks. MG seems to get a lot of changes to support media and ease of use that I don't really have the knowledge to work on.

I like the smooth variation though i agree with tomreyn that you should be able to to freely rotate camera. Especially how quickly units turn around it can be quite jarring.

What about letting player orbit the camera around  in this mode instead of just keeping the units orentation?
