String clarification for translations
« on: 22 October 2012, 09:20:56 »
There is the following string in the screen hints:

Quote
Before you join a multi player game, be sure⏎ you can beat a standard CPU in single player.

In the main language file, these are the CPU levels:

CpuEasy
CpuMega
CpuUltra

Which level does the screen hint refer to?

Hi GunChleoc, and thanks for asking. There is an additional standard / normal / medium CPU, simple titled "CPU", that's the one this message refers to.

I need info on Can Repair, I have trouble locating it in the game:

- "Can repair something", or
- "Somebody can repair it"?

ETA: and another one: fields. What is it, a terrain type? A field in an array? A tile on the map?

Quote
Join player #%d - %s on Team: %d
Who is joining the player? Is he already on the team, or being joined to the team?

Chose to leave the game!
Who, me or another player?

'Can Repair' is part of the the Repair Command description shown when you select to repair another unit. It refers to units you can repair.

Fields refers to land and/or air

The Join player is when one player wants to switch to the team of another

Chose to leave the game refers to a player that quit a game

Thanks! Got it all sorted now. I'll only need to run a spellchecker now and the main file will be done :D

In case it helps: You can download the file, run a spellchecker on it, and upload it again when it's done.
This will also reveal the translation keys (in case there is no other way to access them).

My questions:

1. Under which resolution should I test translations? Do we agree that 1024 x 768 is most common and everything should fit under this setting or we go lower to 800 x 600 ?

2. What does "Disable Lua Script Security Sandbox" mean? (meaning what really i disable here? script? sandbox? security?)

2a. Why after selecting it the warning window says what happens if I enable them?

3. What does "Max lights" setting in options menu refer to? (Maximum number of sources of light? Maximum strength or the lights?)

4. Key "String ID: SavedGameBadVersion" in english is "saved game version does match your application version: [%s] --> [%s]" but it should say "does NOT match" right?

My questions:

1. Under which resolution should I test translations? Do we agree that 1024 x 768 is most common and everything should fit under this setting or we go lower to 800 x 600 ?

Wikipdia states the most common display resolution is currently 1366x768, but I think it's good to support 800x600 because of small / mobile devices especially now that Softcoder is experimenting with ARMs (but not weapons). The more important factor may be the aspect ratio, though, since thhis can actually cause text to cross boundaries on one screen but not on others. So it would be good to test both on 4:3 and on 16:9 where this is an option.

2. What does "Disable Lua Script Security Sandbox" mean? (meaning what really i disable here? script? sandbox? security?)

By ticking this option, you disable some safeguards which prevent some attacks against the Lua scripting engine embedded in the game. This engine is used to interpret script code found in scenarios.

2a. Why after selecting it the warning window says what happens if I enable them?

We had to make a last minute change there. The English source is correct on Transifex.

3. What does "Max lights" setting in options menu refer to? (Maximum number of sources of light? Maximum strength or the lights?)

I think this is the maximum number of light sources.

4. Key "String ID: SavedGameBadVersion" in english is "saved game version does match your application version: [%s] --> [%s]" but it should say "does NOT match" right?

I think you are perfectly right there and have fixed it in the subversion repository. This should propagate to Transifex within the hour.

Or in other words: It's a Sandbox that Lua usually is confined to, in order to prevent security issues.

I left "Sandbox" in English in my translation, because it's a programming term that doesn't exist in my language yet and would be hard to google.

In fact I deleted this translated string off the Gaelic main language file since we needed to make a last minute change there to make the message window print the proper text, saying that activating this checkbox (and thus deactivating the sandbox feature) is dangerous. It previously said it the other way around, or in a way which could be misunderstood. And I didn't know how to fix your translation and was in a hurry. So I'm afraid this one is currently in English only...

stringID: LogScreenGameLoadingUnitTypeSkills
Value: Unit type: %s - skills: %d
What does "skills" mean here? What is the %d number placed after the word?

Units have commands. Commands have one or more skills like move or stop or attack.

Thanks for asking for clarification. And you're right, there are exactly three different methods for the game to determine which units you are drawing a selection box around.
These methods are:
Using the GLSelectBuffer function ("selectbuf" in glestuser.ini), this is currently the default method
Color picking ("color" in glestuser.ini)
Frustum picking ("frustum" in glestuser.ini)

I don't know the details about how these work technically, but if the default option does not work as expected then switching to one of the alternatives has helped some people (me included).

Edit: Corrected to make it say frustum picking, not frustrum calc.
