[done] Language option for techtrees
« on: 12 November 2012, 12:56:39 »
Now that the release is out, I would like to suggest an idea on how to handle translation of the Megapack. This has been discussed before, and one of the difficulties raised was communicating unit names in multiplayer. Part of the community was against translating the megapack at all.

On the other hand, having part of the game in English is not attractive to speakers of other languages, including translators who will definitely have more fun if they can translate everything. For example, if I reverse my translation of one of the Tutorial instructions, it currently looks like this:

Quote
First we need a worker (obraiche). To get one, left-click on the Mainteepee (a' phrìomh thipidh) and start training your worker. To do so, use the 'Produce Worker' ('Dèan obraiche') command by clicking on the worker icon.

So, how about having it as a separate language option? Users of other languages could then, if needed, switch to a common language for techtrees only in multiplayer. The option could be placed in the main options screen and be active throughout the game, or alternatively in the multiplayer lobby, active for multiplayer only.

It would also be a great help for translators if the megapack was then added to Transifex, and to help modders to get their stuff on Transifex as well.

I am against translation of unit names! The main reason for this is the low number of players in Multiplayer games! So we typically see matches with people from all over the world not locale ones with just germans or japanese ones. SO those people have to communicate in some way while playing. One of the ver basic things there are the unit names! I want people to be forced to use the englisch names to avoid confusion while playing. Thats the main reason why I am fully against unit name translation. If we one day face a situation where often hundrets of players show up in the lobby I will change my mind, but for now we mainly have international games and by this we need to use the international language (english) at least for basic things like units.
Try Megaglest! Improved Engine / New factions / New tilesets / New maps / New scenarios

This is why I suggested we could make it an option. This way non-english speakers who play other non-english speakers or a scenario wouldn't be forced to use a language mix, but we could still communicate unit names in international multiplayer.

This is the only game I know of that refuses to translate unit names, although a translation mechanism has recently been implemented.

titi, to be able to communicate english names, those players need to know how to speak english. And the players you get through the english forums and chat speak english, otherwise you wouldn't be able to tell them to play! This logic seems to be quite flawed and won't help to attract non-english players. Is it that important to be able to communicate unit names? Saying where to attack/defend looks more important to me, and this is already possible.

(I'm not saying that MegaGlest will get more players if everything is translated.)
