[lacks info] 3.7.1 Black Flicker on Win8
« on: 17 December 2012, 22:01:39 »
Hey guys,
Whenever I start up a game of Glest (this doesn't happen when in the main menu), the game gets this really ugly flicker. Even the GUI flickers along with it! It's nearly unplayable because of it.

Specs:
OS: Win8
GFX card: Intel Accelerated Graphics Card. Glest worked fine in Win7 (and I was using GAE then, too).

Need to know anything else?

You're writing about "Glest", but the subject line says "3.7.1" and this is the MegaGlest forums. Which game are you discussing?

Well, I figured that it would be understood that I was discussing MegaGlest version 3.7.1 (which is the latest, right?).

Correct, 3.7.1 is the latest stable MegaGlest release (you can always check the MegaGlest website on this to be sure).

Based on your description it can well be a driver issue. Can you try some other OpenGL softwares to see whether it happens there, too?

It works much better if I use something smaller than my laptop's default resolution (1366x768).

I have no problems until I bring up the pause menu, then it starts flickering until I leave the menu.

I think there are no opengl gfx drivers installed. I bet the default drivers are used and .....
Because its windows you have to install the drivers manually. Go to intels webpage and see if they have some for your chipset and Win8 .
Try Megaglest! Improved Engine / New factions / New tilesets / New maps / New scenarios

I think that it may be Win8, because they have no Win8 specific drivers. Although, it shouldn't be an issue, because Win8 is just an upgrade to Win7 (and so Win7 stuff is supposed to work in Win8).

According to this Intel FAQ drivers are available for most of their GPUs by now. You wrote you have an "Intel Accelerated Graphics Card", which matches a wide range of products. You could use a utility such as GPU-Z to narrow it down closer, or review the technical specifications of your laptop (given you know it's exact model # - it should say on the bottom).

I'll try this on my son's Windows 8 box and see what we get and report back here.
