Super Ricochet Arena coming January 20
« on: 10 March 2013, 03:56:01 »
Hey guys,
Long before I got into Glest development I used to develop small games on a easy to use game engine called Multimedia Fusion for my my own entertainment. After taking a long break to Develop Chasm and Annex, I decided to return to my roots and hopefully start my dream of making a full career out of Indie game development.

I decided to start by revising an old game I created called Super Ricochet Arena. Its a fast paced, Top-Down View Arena Game. At the time I was very proud of me adding the ability to customize your character and creating bots which could collect Items and Weapons and tried to mimic a human player somewhat, though originally the game only had 3 Deathmatch stages. After several years of dormancy I've added new stages, new effects, and new game modes, just to name a few and the work still continues.

======Official Description=======

Super Ricochet Arena

Lite version Available, Plus version coming 1/20/14 on Desura: http://www.desura.com/games/ricochet-arena

Super Ricochet Arena is a fast paced top down arena game with unique mechanic where all bullets 'ricochet' off walls which allows for some strategic shooting. There are Three main modes: Arena, Deathmatch, and Endurance, each with 7 maps and a extra practice mode. You can also customize your player character with various Head, Leg, and Torso options. Ricochet is designed to give a quick challenge for players who has just a few minutes to spare.

Platforms:
First will be for Windows via Desura, Then possibly porting to IOS and Android devices. Unfortunately, This game does not export well to Java so I'm afraid there is no Linux or OSX version at this time :( but researching into it.

If you are interested you can read more at my Desura Page:

Thanks!

Speaking of which I added Kestrel as an unlockable character in Ricochet Arena.

(click to show/hide)

If you don't remember, Kestrel is the Alliance Hero unit from Annex, and is the character in Annex Logo. (She is also in my avatar :P) As a side note she still has her player 1 red team color, as she would have playing as player 1 slot in Annex.

I know nothing about this game engine, but a web search for "Multimedia Fusion" linux OR "cross platform" OR "X platform" brought up this:
http://mp2.dk/anaconda/
https://github.com/matpow2/anaconda

Anaconda seems to provide native builds for Linux, Windows and OS X, so no need for Java. Have you had a chance to give this a try?

Edit:

As an update, I just tried the Knytt Underground Linux 64-bit demo (a lovely game!) which is apparently (strings in the binary point to it) based on Multimedia Fusion and Anaconda.

Thanks Tomreyn, I've heard of Anaconda before, and the rule is its free for non commercial purposes but $100 for commercial games, however at the time when i check it out a year ago the project looked dead. Ill test and see if the game ports well to linux!

What I read is that it's provided under dual license, one is GPLv3 and the other is proprietary, and that you can do commercial projects with either.

Quote from: Anaconda README.txt on GitHub
Under the GPL, you can use Anaconda for both commercial and non-commercial purposes and change it to your desire, but you have to either include the (potentially modified) Anaconda sources alongside your game/application, or, if unmodified, make a *CLEARLY* visible reference to this project page, e.g. in the intro of your application/game.

While development seems to have slowed down, the latest commit to the GitHub repository took place on Nov 25, 2013.

Possibly relevant quote from the GNU GPL FAQ:
Quote
If I use a piece of software that has been obtained under the GNU GPL, am I allowed to modify the original code into a new program, then distribute and sell that new program commercially?

You are allowed to sell copies of the modified program commercially, but only under the terms of the GNU GPL.  Thus, for instance, you must make the source code available to the users of the program as described in the GPL, and they must be allowed to redistribute and modify it as described in the GPL.These requirements are the condition for including the GPL-covered code you received in a program of your own.

If you end up using Anaconda under terms of the GPLv3 and the port turns out to be a success, you could still consider to give a share of your Linux and OS X sales back to the developer as a donation.

I remember a post on Clickteam's website explaining that if you purchased a lisenced version (of anaconda) then you do not have to release game open sourced, however in the free version you would.

I still haven't gotten around to testing it hopefully later today I will.

This statement makes sense to me, as long as it (exclusively) refers to the game engine not to the assets used, unless those become part of the binary you produce (which might be how it works i the Anaconda developer intended it to be this way). I had a nice quick chat with him the other day on IRC by the way (though not specifically on when to use which license model). My impression is that he will be interested to work with you if you two can arrange for compensation (so talk to him). However, if you would go for GPL (and would not support him) then you'd likely not be able to expect him to support you.
