Adding Gameranger support?
« on: 22 August 2013, 16:50:42 »
Hello devs and other users!
I have picked up this game , there is a lot of room for improvement but so far I am satisfied with it. I like fantasy theme,  faction variety...Anyway here is the thing. This game has LAN support making it ideal for using vpn client called Gameranger , but devs have to agree with their staff.
Gameranger already supports games like aoe series , even the unofficial forgotten empires expansion.. I think adding gameranger support would increase the playerbase too.  :D

This was discussed in the past.

GameRanger is closed-source proprietary, only the client is available, and what I think is most relevant is that it runs only on Windows and OS X. You could say "better than nothing", but first of all whoever wants to can already setup a VPN and play in there, and secondly if we supported this software we'd segregate the already small player base more (and discourage adoption of libre software principles).

So the only argument in favor of it would be that you can host games easily. That's indeed worth something, and an issue we should try to find a solution to (which isn't easy), but in my opinion the solution should look different.

Yes I don't want to have any closed source parts in MG so thats not an option.
Try Megaglest! Improved Engine / New factions / New tilesets / New maps / New scenarios

First of all , thank you for your answers! I saw that topic and I beleive it was for original Glest? Second of all , where can I find a tutorial to host my MegaGlest game then? {I have already seen the tutorial on the wiki , but it is not clear for me} I now see that my way is not the solution but using gameranger would not require modifying any part of the game... {I think} , just your permission xD But the point , that it is not usable on Linux platforms still stands.. and that it would destroy the playerbase.

Perhaps , the devs could integrate  a bulit-in vpn client of their own , specialized for this game?

But MG already has its own multiplayer servers, in game multiplayer lobby, and a tool to let you know if there are currently multiplayer games available.

You don’t need a tutorial for this.

Just make sure your router and/or firewall open port 61357 for your computer … standard stuff for games.

Then in megaglest ‘new game’>‘internet game’>‘host game’ and make sure ‘publish on masterserver?’ is ticked, that’s it.
