Installation crushes, game won't start...

Hi, I recently wanted to check out megaglest, but for some reason, at the end of installation the installer crushes (I get a window saying an error occurred and the application stopped working). The game files are copied in the right place though, but when I try to start megaglest, there is again an error (saying something about access violation). Can you help me get it to work? I'm using Windows 7.

The installer should work fine. In worsed case download and try again .

If the game does not run I think it is a problem with the gfx drivers. Install latest graphics drivers, even if windows-update says all is ok. Go to the chipset manufactorer and download/install the latest driver ( intel/ATi(amd) /nvidia )

Please post better details than what you posted above. Screenshots of the error is possible and exact error text displayed with as much detail as possible.

Ok so, I tried installing it on my other PC with windows XP and it works fine... I guess I'll be playing on that PC... thank you anyway...

While I'm glad you found a way to work around it which works for you personally, it'd be much better if you were to give something back by explaining, in detail, how it doesn't work on the other system, so that the developers are in a position where they can possibly tell whether this is an issue in MegaGlest, and if so, one which will affect more people, and if so, craft a fix so that others will not run into this same situation in the future.

This said, if there's a language barrier which prevents you from doing so, or if you are just young and you think you cannot describe the problem properly, that's both good excuses.

The installer crushes before it gets to making of icons, so I don't have MegaGlest icon in my start menu or anywhere else. I started it by "megaglest.exe" from where the game was installed. It worked on the other PC that way, I rarely use icons.

I believe it's the normal user. There is no other accounts on this PC...

Thanks for providing those additional details. The MegaGlest 3.9.0 installer for Windows you have downloaded seems to be 254,255,092 bytes, this is the correct size. Still, it s strange that it would crash during the installation process, this is the first time this was ever reported.

Which anti-virus software do you run there, if any? Do you run additional anti malware tools - if so, which?

Please click on the Start / Windows button and type winver into the search box and press enter to run it, then take a shot of the newly spawned window.

Do you experience similar problems (installers failing, programs closing unexpectedly more than they do for other people) regularly?

When is the last time you ran a full AV scan?
Is Windows Update configured to install updates automatically?
Are there recommended Windows updates you prevent from installing on purpose?

These questions / tasks are a bit more difficult, catch me on IRC if you need help with them:
When is the last time your anti-virus signatures were updated?
When were the last Windows updates installed successfully?
Which file system is D: formatted with, and is it stored on an internal hard disk drive (HDD), and on the same HDD as the C: partition?
Do a full file system check of D:, does it find any errors?
Do a SMART long self test of the HDD which D: is on, what are the results?

4) No, everything worked fine so far. Some problems are usually fixed with compatibility feature, but not this one...

Thus, when you open the xz file in 7-zip, you'll see a tar file. Open that in 7-zip, too, and the contents of that tar file are what you'll copy to the same folder you placed the binaries.

I extracted the files like you instructed, but I still get error... So I guess the installer installed game properly and than crushed... so the game is crushing even though it's properly installed.

Or perhaps a simpler approach, run MegaGlest with megaglest --verbose > output.txt. This redirects the standard output. Thus, the text that is currently being printed to the console will instead be printed to a file named "output.txt" (in the current directory). Copy and paste the contents of that file here.

Easier than working with pictures and nothing is truncated.

No, I checked it. In the Roaming folder there is no "megaglest" subfolder...

Then this is the problem. I think this issue may be fixed in the current dev version in git, but for now please create the megaglest folder in that path and retry.
