Graphic on Linux 32bit version.
« on: 9 February 2014, 07:19:30 »
On another computer I' ve installed Manjaro Linux 32bit, based on Arch Linux. I've tried to install Megaglest from the packages manager and from the web on megaglest.org. In both cases there isn't the Megaglest background in the Main Menu and in the game i see nothing. I think this is a graphic problem, I' ve got a Nvidia GeForce 6200 256 mb. Do you have any solution?

That's probably a driver problem. Make sure you have current drivers installed. Nvidias latest proprietary driver for this system is version 325.1, release date: 2013.8.5.

If this doesn't work, try with nouveau, the open source driver, too. During testing, be sure to run MegaGlest from a terminal window so you get to see its output and any warnings and error messages. The system logs you can check for driver errors are ~/.xsession-errors.log (may or may not exist), /var/log/Xorg.*.log and /var/log/syslog.

Geforce 6200 is very old! I think it's maybe not even a PCIe card. You cannot use the current nvidia drivers with this card. There are ( maybe ) some legacy drivers available, but I think in general this card is no longer supported by linux.

The best you can do is install the oldest driver you can find that works with a modern X Server .

This is a graphics card from 2004 and I fear it will not be powerful enough to play MG. You are maybe able to launch a game and playa bit but if there are some more units it will get really really slow.

Yes this would be asking a bit too much, also we're not really into this. You should be able to get help from those who provide support for your operating system / Linux distribution, though. Pear OS seems to have disbanded recently, but Manjaro seems to have a vivid community which also deals with hardware / driver issues.

And to give you a rough idea of how slow your gfx card is, compare it to my current one ( Geforce 650 ti boost ).
You would need round about 500 of your Graphics cards to get to the speed of this todays mid range gfx card! So no, a Geforce 6200 is definitly not fast enough for MegaGlest.  It may start up , and yes maybe you can play a bit, but once there are some more units your fps will drop down a lot..

VideocardBenchmark.net helps a lot there:
  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 650 Ti Boost scores 3,568
  • Nvidia GeForce 6200 scores 44
  • ATI Radeon X1650 XT (my card, which I guess marks the bare minimum which works fine for average games) is not listed, but should be somewhere around 140
  • Intel HD 3000 scores 306
