[closed]Random freezes on ubuntu 14.04
« on: 8 September 2014, 01:35:07 »
I just upgraded to ubuntu 14.04 (was running 13.10). Now megaglest (v3.9.1) freezes randomly at various points in the game, its pretty much unplayable.

The game will freeze completely, then a minute or so later, everything goes ultra-speed to catch up, and then it slows back down to normal speed for a few minutes, then freezes again.

I've tried closing down every other process to make sure megaglest has enough memory and cpu to run, but it doesn't help the issue. Not sure what else to do to diagnose this.

Has anyone experienced anything similar?

Hey vibe ,
Since you upgraded , maybe its this problem https://forum.megaglest.org/index.php?topic=9492.0

If not , try running game from terminal with ./start_megagelst , and after it crashes , post the results , maybe someone will understand and help.

Could you specify whether this is happening only during online game-play or offline as well?

This sort of bug sounds like it's due to a bad internet connection. If this is the case, then I'm afraid there's unlikely to be a fix (the only fixes would be to not be downloading/ uploading stuff if you are while playing eg. steam, or switching to an ISP who supplies a faster broadband connection) .

if it occurs offline as well, then it's probably something to do with your gfx. In this case there are fixes.

Vibe has the game working (just not well), so I don't think this is the bug.

Do you use a nvidia card ? If yes, got to the options and switch the selection mode to colorpicking. Current nvidia drivers have a serious bug which cause out of memory using "selectbuf" selection.

This fix helped a lot, strangely I could start the game even with this missing library. Symlinking the library stopped a lot of the random freezing, though there was still a little bit of freezing, but nowhere near as bad. The game is now playable again.

To answer jammy's question, I've only played offline so far against the AI.

Also, I don't have an nvidia card

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 06)

I will play around with the gfx settings to see if I can solve the remaining freeze issue

So you have a Haswell CPU. Those should come with an integrated graphics chipset which should be good enough to run MegaGlest.

If you experience freezes it's likely due to imperfect drivers. Since the hardware is relatively new, updating drivers can be a good idea.

Yes but I was running megaglest on Ubuntu Lucid (10.04) with no problems at all. Only when I upgraded to 14.04.1 did it start freezing (same laptop)
