Looks awesome!

Is there anything we can do about the non-free-ness of this background video? I would like the new design to go on GitHub, and it should be fully GPL compatible.

Maybe we can also convert the video to an animated image to (possibly save on bandwith and client processing time)?

Yes , I like to have 100% GPL , but the video (looks very nice though) isn't . A similar alternative would be good , I searched with no luck.
I think since its a fog only , there could be a video which loops under 2-3 seconds , and it could have 200-400 kb, so animated gif I think it wouldn't be good.

I think videos like this can be made with gimp!

Looks like a standard cloud effect to me, so a static version should be easy to generate.

Filters -> Render -> Clouds -> Take your pick.

What resolution do you need?

As you can see the background is a looping video of fog, I tried to do that in GIMP with GAP but I have problems.
I think 1024x768 would be good.

Here are some cloud variations: http://www.foramnagaidhlig.net/temp/clouds.zip

I don't know how to animate them though without causing huge files.

I set the filter to make them tileable, so the background on huge screens could be filled with these (CSS background repeat).

We want those huge files!
Or can you export them as a video and recode them in h264 or whatever to reduce their size.

The format I get from Gimp is an animated gif that's around 25 MB. You really want the users to load such a big file in their browser, just so they can look at some stats?

Yes , maybe we can compress it , if not possible , then we should probably go with a static image.

The animation I was trying to do was only a blend animation anyway, beybe someone who knows HTML5/CSS well can generate the same off the images in the xcf. That would be the solution that uses least bandwidth.

I concur with Alket, it's not easy to find something matching online. I searched for
Code: [Select]
html5 OR css cloud OR smoke OR nebula backgroundand
Code: [Select]
html5 OR css cloud effectand the only half-way matching results I could find are:

https://codepen.io/montanaflynn/pen/orxwK

http://www.clicktorelease.com/blog/how-to-make-clouds-with-css-3d
(as discussed at http://www.paulrohde.com/css-3d-clouds-retake/ )

And those were pretty CPU intensive for me. On the other hand, the download is pretty small.

I really like the look of those CSS's, but I'm not sure how much of a problem the large cpu usage will be. It requires 20-30% of my i5 3210m, and is very choppy on my phone (naturally).

The page only uses a high amount of cpu if it's being shown on the display.

Maybe we should just go with a nifty but static image then. Personally, I have always hated having to wait for my browser to compute/download nifty blinky moving stuff, when all I want is to access a piece of information.

I'm not a fan of looking at blurred stuff, it makes my brain go funny. Maybe try desaturating/lowering the contrast and playing with the brightness.
