I would like to tab out of the game or use Ctrl+ Strg to switch between fullscreen and windowed mode. Could you add that feature

As long as we use libsdl 1 this is not possible. Its oldschool alt+enter there to toggle fullscreen/windowed mode. ( alt+tab is not  possible in libsdl 1 )
(  You are welcome to help to introduce libsdl 2 in MG ;)   )
Try Megaglest! Improved Engine / New factions / New tilesets / New maps / New scenarios

I recently tried the game under gnome with wayland it works really well but to prevent that megaglest switches to windowed mode I use a workspace for megaglest only. The performance is a bit worse than under X but not that much(on my old laptop).

In many games I do use windowed mode and make it full screen via my window manager. I can then switch my tags (~desktops) without a problem. This only works if your window manager has a shortcut for fullscreen.
