Author Topic: porn spam in bug sections, and how to easily stop it  (Read 5334 times)

When someone registers, why not have a confirmation email sent to their listed email address, which they have to click a link on to activate their accounts?  Thats how most places do it.

I posted a reply in a topic in the bug section just now, and noticed the first topic there was spam advertising porn sites.  Guess no moderators are online right now.

After having this mentally unstable brat voted out of my forum, I started making everyone get approval before being able to post, since he kept registering using free email host, and there far too many of them to ban.  So I just take the IP address of anyone awaiting validation, and google it between quotation marks.  If hundreds or thousands of things pop up, usually with the word "proxy" then I know its a proxy used by spammers, stalkers, pedifiles, and jerks in general to avoid detection.  They have a lot of websites out there that allow you to do things through their IP address, so no one can trace you.  I assume only degenerates use such things.

Just make sure you don't just google the numbers, since nothing shows up.  You have to put them between "quotation marks".  Eventually, all those trying to harass you will get bored, them stopping by for a random attempt to get in from time to time, but things will quiet down after a few days.

Unfortunately is not that easy, bots are able to automatically reply to those kind of emails...

Adding mods to the board is really a pain, because you have to install them every time you update the board.

I'm staring to ban entire email domains, most of the spammers use the same russian free mail providers, so it should be quite effective.

A lot of forums have it where you have to type in the letters you see appear to prove you are a person, and not a spambot.  Earlier today I had problems with one that had its last two letters look like H, W, or U, me unable to tell.  Fortunately I could retry until I got something I could definately recognize.

I'm sure if you google around you can find some site that freely gives you code to copy and paste somewhere to do that.

I wonder why your forum is targeted.  Perhaps the easier you make it, the more likely you are to be targeted.  But I had a forum for years and let it so that even unregistered guest could post, and didn't have any problems at all.

Please don't use a confirmation email... extremely annoying and wasteful of time.

May be use two of those letter recognition boxes. If somehow the bot overrides the first box, you can kill it on the second.

The extensions I posted kill al robots but don't disturb users. I don't think it's so difficult to install them.
